Thank you for sharing this story! It was really cool to read and interesting that it stuck around in your head for that long that you remembered it 6 years later. My experience was different. I actually live in Cal now as well but was in NY at the time. I liked the song when it first came out but it got such heavy air play on the local "alternative rock" stations (god, remember those?) that I got tired of it.

Maybe a year later I was at a friends house and he had the album and insisted I give it a listen. I didn't hold out much hope for it but I copied the CD to cassette so I could listen to it in my car and I don't think it left my car for months! I turned it over and over and never got tired of it. I loved every track. Mighty KC may have turned out to be my least favorite song off Example. I couldn't get enough. I remember having to hunt people down someone online who had Baypath Road and get them to make copies, this was before downloading was really much of a thing.

I just posted the same thing on You Tube, but since this very cool site is apparently where most people have come to tell their story, I'll tell mine too---

It was Christmas season, 1995. I was riding around town with two others after a nice dinner and buzz, checking out some of the holiday lighting jobs people had done on their houses. I had never heard anything by For Squirrels before in my life, though, oddly enough, I remember the exact location we were at when Mighty K.C. came onto the radio. Totally got my attention. Then it was gone. Never heard it again.. and didn't even know the title or artist.

Since this was in California, you may understand that a band of this age and chart ranking, and especially from 3,000 miles away, would not be getting much local exposure.. though I did remember some of the lyrics.

It took years before the internet gained the capability to search song lyrics with any accuracy, but that's what it took for me to finally hunt it down sometime around 2001. Why did that one obscure radio song hang so strong with me all that time? I have no idea. It just did. Since then I have come to find vast enjoyment of their many works.

I realize that I am not exactly their most accomplished follower. I"m reading others here who have weathered those credentials far beyond mine, but I am thankful that we're all still together in a place like this to respect and remember some extraordinary people and to enjoy what they gave to us.
